The Neyyar River originating in the Agasthyarkoodam Hills offers amazing scenery to travellers. The Neyyar dam where all the waters of the river are collected and the gardens surrounding it are major tourist spots.
The view of the Western Ghats and the wide expanse of the reservoir lure several visitors. Another attraction at the place is the aquarium in the shape of a star fish.
The aquarium which houses a long list of colourful fishes is located near the Neyyar Dam. There are 75 glass tanks where fishes are displayed. The walls are adorned with paintings. Other interesting sights are the miniature waterfalls and models of various marine species.
Among the fishes that visitors can enjoy observing are Miss Kerala, considered Kerala's own ornamental fish; Flower Horn, which is believed to bring good luck; Arowana, termed God's own fish; Black Ghost, which is thought to be housing the souls of dead people; Alligator gar, which has many peculiarities; Silver shark; Schmidt and Shovelnose catfish. There are around 50 varieties of fresh water ornamental fish at the aquarium.
With so many amazing fish species on display, the aquarium attracts around 200 visitors every day. On holidays, the number almost doubles. The facility was opened by the Fisheries Department in 2012. The maintenance of the two-storied building is carried out by ADAK (Agency for Development of Aquaculture), the agency involved in promoting fish farming under the Fisheries Department.
Visitors are allowed from 10 am to 7 pm every day. Entry is by tickets priced at Rs 25 for adults and Rs 15 for children. Trips from schools attract a discounted rate of Rs 5 for preprimary students and Rs 10 for students in class 6 to class 10.
The Neyyar Dam aquarium of the Fisheries Department entertains as well as informs visitors about ornamental fishes.
