Puthuvype beach, located in Kochi suburbs, is one of Kerala’s less frequented beaches simply because not many people know about it. If crowds aren’t your thing, this Kochi beach is a must visit destination. The tranquil sea, the green terrain at the beach and the lone tree standing in the foreshore makes the unexplored beach picture perfect. The lawn seems like a green carpet that the sea has spread by its side for kids who run around the tree. The Chinese fishing nets lend a rustic charm to the scenery. Its proximity to the city of Kochi makes Puthuvype an easy picnic spot. A halfanhour drive from the city will take you to the beach. While a stretch of pine trees separate the beach from the shallow ditches in the north, the huge fence of the LNG terminal is its southern boundary. The lawn is not marshy and ideal for playing beach sports. Locals assure that bathing is comparatively safer at the beach. The light house tower, another huge attraction at Puthuvype, offers a stunning view of the beach and its surroundings. When built, it was one of the tallest lighthouses in Asia. Entry tickets are issued from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The tower is open on all days. The view from the top of the light house is marvellous. Under a clear sky, it provides a panoramic glimpse of the city beneath. The powerful beacon light emitted is considered to be equivalent to the glare of 4 million lighted candles. The beach buggies, available on rent at the beach, provide great fun for visitors. These buggies which have reverse gear can swerve on sand and is tailormade for even women and children. The first oceanarium of the country, which will showcase an aquarium alley, deep sea tunnel, polar pavilion, shark tank, touch tank and other entertainment facilities, is all set to be built at the entrance of the beach. Shops are found at the Puthuvype main junction. The Puthuvype beach is also the venue for the swimming and kayaking competitions held during the Cochin Carnival.
