The Hindu and Jain monuments which is situated in the Bundelkhand region is a fabulous example of the iconic Indian architectural and cultural heritage of the Medieval times.

Most of the monuments at Khajuraho were built by the Chandela rulers between 950 and 1050 CE. Historical documents say that, in the twelfth century, there had been a mega temple complex with more than 85 shrines in this area that sprawled in 20 square kilometres. However, now, only twenty temples remain in just 6 square kilometres. Among the surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva temple stands out for its scintillating stone sculptures that boast of intricate detailing and wonderful craftsmanship. The temple complex that was hidden inside the thick forests for over seven centuries were discovered, in 1838, by the British engineer TS Burt.

The tourists can easily visit the monuments here. For that the Khajuraho temple complex has been divided into three zones – Eastern, Southern and Western. Audio guided tour is available only for the Western zone. The audio guided tour organised by the Archaeological Survey of India explains the history of the temples and also the details of the architectural styles. The iconic Khajuraho dance festival held in February every year is a celebration of arts and culture. Indian classical dance performances are held at the Chitragupta and Vishwanatha temples in Khajuraho during the dance festival. The tourists could enjoy the the Son et Lumière shows, every evening, at the Khajuraho temple complex. The first show is in English while the second one is in Hindi. The shows are held at the open meadow in the temple complex.
