Supermodel and actor Milind Soman is extremely fitness conscious and so is his wife Ankita Konwar. Even while setting out on journeys, the couple chooses travel destinations which involve some physical activity and test their fitness levels. The latest trip of the celebrities to Sandakphu in Bengal too was no different.
A little-known trekking spot, Sandakphu offers a great experience for adventure lovers with lofty mountains and rich greenery. Fifty-five-year-old Milind’s trek to Sandakphu was after taking part in a police marathon in Darjeeling recently.
Sandakphu is not a popular tourist spot. However, it is known as the tallest peak in West Bengal and as the highest area of Singalila Ridge in Darjeeling. Milind has shared a striking photo clicked during the trip on Instagram with the caption, “The most beautiful skies, the most beautiful mountains, the most beautiful people.”
The adventure involves a 21-km trek along Sambarkam. A highlight of the trek is that it offers an amazing as well as unique view of the four tallest peaks in the world - Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. Travellers setting out on this trek during the months of April and May can enjoy the beautiful sight of rhododendrons in bloom. Meanwhile, a trek in November presents a clear sky, which has been captured in the picture posted by Milind.
Yet another attraction of the area is Phalut, situated 21 km from Sandakphu and at an altitude of 11,811 feet above sea level. However, the trekking path to Phalut is much more difficult. Travellers can also head to Srikhola from here via Rammam. The path passes through Singalila national park and travellers have to obtain an entry permit from the Forest Office. Advance booking is available for huts in Sandakphu and Phalut where travellers can stay.
Things to note
The path to Sandakphu starts from Manebhanjan and touches Chitre, Meghma, Tonglu, Gairibas, Kala Pokhri and Bikkibhanjan. As the terrain is rather difficult, only people with good fitness levels should attempt the trek.
