Places to visit in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, just a hop skip and jump away from India is one of the most preferred vacation spots for people from India. Once known as the 'Garden city of the East’, Colombo is where you start exploring this country. Stylish eateries and shops exist cheek by jowl with old colonial structures in the fast-changing skyline. Here are four of the must-visit places in the island nation.
Adam’s Peak
Once you are through gaping at the beautiful city sights and galli cricket at Colombo and Kandy, head to Adam's Peak, one of Sri Lanka's most popular pilgrimage sites. They say that you can see the Buddha's own footprint here. And it also offers one of the most magical views of the whole island.
Sigiriya
A World Heritage Site, Sigiriya or the Lion Rock is a remarkable archaeological site. Once you visit this place, you will have to agree with the locals that it is, in fact, a wonder of the world. This ancient palace and fortress complex is one of the most popular tourist spots. The rocky plateau of Sigiriya served as a monastery since olden days and it is said that the king decided to construct his palace here. The ruins include the statue of a lion. Gaze up at the paintings on the rocks and the mirror wall made of polished rock.
Nuwara Eliya
Hire a bicycle and go exploring this formal colonial retreat. The tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, the Pidurutalagala, overlooks this city. The 'Sita Kovil' here traces back to the Ramayana legend.
Mirissa
The sandy beaches of Mirissa are breathtaking. Located close to the southern tip of the island of SriLanka, this crescent-shaped beach is gaining a reputation for being a party destination for young travelers. Whale watching is one of the favorite pastimes at this beach.
