Two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu got her first win of the New Year against Chinese Taipei's Shuo Yun Sung in the India Open in New Delhi on Tuesday. Sindhu won 21-14, 22-20 in under an hour and would face Japan's rising star Tomoka Miyazaki in a potentially tough second round.
Sindhu missed the season-opening Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur due to her wedding. She tied the knot with fiance Venkata Datta Sai in a traditional wedding in Jaipur in mid-December.
Meanwhile, the ace doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty posted a 23-21, 29-21, 21-16 win over Malaysia's Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee.
Keralite Kiran George secured a hard-fought win over Japan's Yushi Tanaka in his round-of-32 game. Kiran won 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in a battle that lasted 71 minutes. Another Malayali, Treesa Jolly and her doubles partner, Gayatri Gopichand, lost their women's doubles opener 21-23, 19-21 to Arisa Igarashi and Ayako Sakuramoto of Japan.
