Olympiad gold medalist and popular chess commentator, Tania Sachdev, has hit out at the Delhi government over lack of recognition for her accomplishments. D Gukesh received Rs. 5 crore from the Tamil Nadu government for winning the World Chess Championship.
Sachdev was part of the Indian team, also comprising Dronavalli Harika, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agrawal that triumphed in the 45th Chess Olympiad in September.
But the Woman Grandmaster feels her home state has not done enough in terms of motivation. "Having played for India since 2008, it’s disheartening to see a lack of recognition from the Delhi government for achievements in chess. States that support and celebrate their champions directly inspire excellence and motivate talent. Sadly, Delhi has yet to take this step," Sachdev posted on social media platform X, also called Twitter.
"In 2022 Chess Olympiad I came back with a historic team bronze and an individual medal. Two years later 2024, the historic Chess Olympic gold, and till date there has been no acknowledgment or recognition by the state govt.
“As someone who proudly represents Delhi and India, I hope the Aam Aadmi Party, Atishi ma’am and Arvind Kejriwal sir see value in supporting their chess athletes.”
Sachdev tagged the Delhi government led by Atishi and got a response from the chief minister. "Hi Tania, we have always supported all our athletes, sportsmen and sportswomen, especially in our schools. Would love to meet you and understand what more can be done especially for chess players. My office will reach out to you and I am really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions," Atishi posted.
India had clinched a historic double at the Olympiad as the men's team comprising D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna triumphed. The Tamil Nadu government honoured its players, Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali with Rs 25 lakh each for the Olympiad win.
