Kochi: "Being part of a big club like Kerala Blasters is a huge responsibility. I enjoy taking responsibilities and getting things done," says Kerala Blasters' new head coach Mikael Stahre. The 48-year-old Swede has his task cut out in his new role as Blasters will be looking to win the coveted Indian Super League (ISL) title that has eluded them since the league's inspection in 2014.
In an online interview with Malayala Manorama, Stahre, who took over the reins from Serbian Ivan Vukomanovic last month, said he was optimistic about his team's prospects for next season.
What will be your specific goal for the upcoming season?
I wish to transform Blasters into a 'winning team' within a reasonable time. For that to happen, the team members need to combine humility and confidence. Their hard work will definitely lead to success in the long run. The fan base is the heart of the club and it will be incredible if we can give them their first piece of silverware. The previous coach (Ivan Vukomanovic) has done a great job at the club.
Last year, Blasters kicked off the season positively, but their form fizzled out afterwards. What could be the reason?
It is important to play with confidence and self belief in each phase. I want to keep every player motivated and fill their mind with positive input.
Tell us about your pre-season plans?
It is crucial to have a good pre-season camp. We need to ensure good training facilities and strong opponents to play friendly matches. Our pre-season camp will begin in Thailand on July 3.
You are one of the youngest managers in the history of Kerala Blasters…
I’ve not been a professional player. I think I was born to be a coach! I was just 14 when I decided to pursue a coaching career. Though I did everything to realise my goal I had to face lots of obstacles to land a coaching job. If you do not possess the skills to be a professional player, it is not easy to get coaching opportunities.
