Mohammed Azharuddeen's fighting century went in vain as Kerala failed to scale Baroda's imposing total of 403/4 in their Vijay Hazare Trophy opener in Hyderabad on Monday.
Kerala's innings folded for 341, ending in a 62-run defeat. Openers Rohan S Kunnummal (65) and Ahammed Imran (51) added 113 in 15.4 overs, but the Kerala innings collapsed thereafter. Salman (19), Shoun Roger (27), N M Sharafuddeen (21) failed to build on the solid start. Veteran all-rounder Jalaj Saxena fell first ball.
Captained by Salman Nizar in the absence of injured Sachin Baby and Sanju Samson, Kerala were guilty of allowing Baroda to score freely. Ninad Rathva top scored with a 99-ball 136, while Baroda skipper Krunal Pandya made an unbeaten 80 off 54.
Krunal's brother and Team India's star, Hardik, was not part of Baroda's Vijay Hazare Trophy match though he featured for them in the recently held Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20.
