Ravichandran Ashwin wants his father to be forgiven for saying he was forced to retire out of humiliation.
The veteran off-spinner's father made a controversial remark in an interview given to a television channel a day after he dropped a bombshell by announcing his retirement from all forms of international cricket.
“My dad isn’t media trained... request you all to forgive him and leave him alone,” Ashwin posted on the social media platform, X, also called Twitter.
Ashwin's father had said: “The sudden retirement gave us a shock. At the same time, we were expecting that also because humiliation was going on. How long can he tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own.”
Ashwin's decision to call it a day after the third Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia fueled speculation that he was upset by the limited opportunities with the national team.
Ashwin last played in the second Test in Adelaide and was not part of the playing XI in Brisbane. He last played a T20I in November 2022 and his last ODI appearance came against Australia in Chennai on October 8, 2023. The comments made by Ashwin's father added substance to the rumours that he was being forced out of the squad. Ashwin took 765 international wickets, including 537 in Tests.
