PM calls himself a fakeer, gets trolled online

Soon after prime minister Narendra Modi's speech at BJP's Parivartan Yatra in Uttar Pradesh, the hashtag 'YoModiSoFakeer' started trending on Twitter.

"I am being hounded as if I have committed some crime by waging a battle against graft. But, what can my opponents do to me? I am a fakeer (hermit)...jhola ley kar chaley jayenge (I will exit with my little belongings)," Modi said during the rally.

Twitterati went abuzz trolling Modi on his expensive clothing line and foreign tours. Politicians from rival parties also expressed their shock at Modi's statement.

Hours after Modi claimed he is a "fakeer", BSP supremo Mayawati reacted saying the prime minister is "bahut bade maldar" (very wealthy) and wondered how a "well-wisher of the affluent" can be a hermit.

"Everyday, you wear four new pairs of clothes, you wear a Rs 10 lakh suit and tour the world. People have lost trust in your words," Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.

Modi was speaking at a public rally held to mobilize public support ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in UP.

Modi has faced online wrath several times in the past. Previously, he was trolled mercilessly by Keralites for comparing Kerala with Somalia.
