The turn of fortune is quite unpredictable; so is the history of nations. The mighty East India Company, which paved way for the British occupation of India, is now controlled by Indians!

The company which sells tea, coffee, biscuits and chocolate is now owned by Sanjeev Mehta from Mumbai. Moreover, the Keralite businessman MA Yousafali too has shares in this company.

Changing the history of India forever, the British rule came to India through East India Company. Originally formed in 1600 by a group of wealthy men in England for spice trade, the company also obtained the powers to invade foreign lands from King Charles II.

It was also given permission to build forts and even to keep an army of its own in foreign countries.

Queen Victoria took over the company in 1857 when the struggle for independence grew stronger in India. Eventually, in 1874, the company was closed down. However, the company’s title and its symbols remained.

The East India Company got a new lease of life in the last century. And in 2005, Mumbai businessman Sanjeev Mehta purchased it.
