Chandigarh: A national-level woman hockey player was found dead on the railway tracks in Haryana's Rewari, the GRP said Friday.
"Jyoti Gupta, a rising 20-year-old hockey star and a national-level player, hailing from Vijay Nagar in Sonepat, was found dead on the railway tracks Wednesday evening," SHO, Government Railway Police, Rewari, Ranveer Singh, said.
"The loco pilot of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express reported that a young woman suddenly appeared before the train when it was crossing an overbridge near the Rewari station late in the evening. She was run over by the train despite brakes being pulled by the pilot," the official said.
The body was later found by the GRP who searched the spot. Singh said no suicide note was found from the spot.
"The postmortem examination was conducted Thursday. We talked to her family but they told us there was no reason for her to end her life and that they could not believe that she could commit suicide. However, we are investigating," he added.
The GRP official said Jyoti had left home on Wednesday and told her parents that she was going to the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, to get the spelling of her name corrected in a certificate.
"Her family said Jyoti had called them in the evening and told them that her bus had broken down and that she will be a bit late to get home," he said.
The woman's identity was established after the GRP answered the call from her parents on personal mobile phone that was recovered from the vicinity of the body.
