Split wide open: Jayarajan's fall exposes CPM Kannur lobby's mask of unity

Kannur: The resignation of E.P. Jayarajan from the cabinet has run a wedge within the Kannur lobby of the party, which had so far presented a united stance in the face of various controversies.

The resignation and the events that preceded it have led to open debates within the official faction of the party.

Kerala industries minister EP Jayarajan resigns

During the state secretariat meeting a day ago, some leaders from Kannur used the chance to attack the cornered comrade.

Two prominent leaders of the CPM, who had opposed Jayarajan's candidature from Mattannur, were at the forefront in criticizing him for nepotism. One of these leaders wanted to contest the Mattannur seat.

Coordinated efforts were made to keep Jayarajan out of party functions at Mattannur, a year before assembly elections were announced.

However, Jayarajan was loath to abdicating the constituency where the construction of an airport has been proposed.

Denial mode, delaying tactics bode ill for CPM

When the controversy surrounding Jayarajan flared up, these leaders were at the forefront of agitations against him. Perhaps the controversy surrounding the appointment of minister K.K. Shailaja's son in the airport is a rebuff to what Jayarajan and Sreemathy are now facing.

This also points to deep fissures within the Kannur lobby.
