Rasila wouldn't have been killed if Infosys had probed her complaints: family

Security guard Bhaben Saikia (left) was arrested for murdering Rasila Raju at Infosys Pune office.

Pune/Kozhikode: The family of Rasila Raju, the Keralite woman Infosys employee who was murdered at her Pune office by a security guard Sunday night, has alleged that the company had ignored her complaints against the would-be killer.

The murder could have been averted had the company not turned down the request she made for a transfer to its Bengaluru office, citing her safety concerns, Manoj, her maternal uncle, told PTI Monday.

Rasila, 24, was allegedly strangulated by a Bhaben Saikia, a security guard working in the office after she chided him for staring at her.

She had complained about Saikia's 'advances' to the company but no action had been taken against him, her uncle Manoj said.

"We will file a complaint for a detailed inquiry into Rasila's death. Earlier, during her calls to her family, she had mentioned about the same security guard making advances toward her. Though she had complained to the company officials no action was taken," Manoj said.

“Citing lack of security at work place, Rasila had asked for a transfer to the Bengaluru office. But the company turned down her request,” he said.

Onmanorama could not independently confirm whether Infosys turned down her transfer request and on what grounds.

The murder of the young systems engineer has come as a rude shock to her family members who were making arrangements for her marriage. The family said they will be filing a case against the company.

Compensation

Meanwhile, Infosys announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore to Rasila's family. The firm also promised a job for a relative of Rasila.

Guard didn't act alone?

Suresh, another relative of Rasila, said the family suspects the involvement of more than one person in the murder.

“Rasila was found murdered in the conference room of the office. It is hard to believe that the guard walked all the way to the conference room alone, without being stopped by anyone else. Someone else must have assisted him, we are 100 percent sure,” he said.

The family said there were injuries on Rasila's face, legs and chest. Her ornaments and mobile phone have also been stolen, they said.

“She was strangulated with a computer cord so hard that the cable pierced her neck,” Rasila's relatives said.

No CCTV cameras

Rasila's body was found in the conference room on the 9th floor of the Infosys building in Phase II of Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Pune Sunday evening. Almost all the other areas of the Infosys office in Pune are under CCTV surveillance except the conference room where the murder took place.

Saikia, a security guard from Terrier Security Services posted on the campus, has been remanded in police custody till February 4 after police nabbed him at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai.

Company said 'medical emergency'

A pall of gloom descended on the village of Kizhakkal Kadavu in Kozhikode as the news of the death trickled in.

"It is a rude shock for us. Rasila had made a call to her stepmother about 2.30 pm Sunday and was speaking casually," Manoj said.

Rasila had visited her native village only two months back. Her mother had died two years ago from cancer. Her brother Rajin is working abroad.

Her father Raju, who is working as a home guard at Kunnamangalam police station, had left for Pune along with some relatives Monday following an intimation from her office Sunday night that Rasila had 'a medical emergency'.

Her relatives inquired with their contacts at Pune and got to know what had happened to Rasila.
