Kochi: College union elections are lessons in democracy. Students of the St Teresa’s College in Ernakulam took the event a step further when they digitized the whole process all by themselves.
Students of the all-woman college elected their union leaders and declared the winners in less than five and half hours thanks to an innovative application developed by a team of computer applications students.
Revathi Anil Kumar, K Saranya and Nikhila Joju were liberally supported by their teachers Sangeeta Chandran and Rajis Pillai in designing the application to make the first digital college union election a reality.
As many as 30 students vied for the 13-member union. Donna Denny was elected the chairperson while Sreelakshmi Raghunath was chosen as the vice-chairperson. Vaishnavi Venu would be the new general secretary while Achu Oommen and Rania Shamsuddeen would represent the college in the university union.
Anagha Mary Varghese was elected the arts club secretary and Alisha Charles the magazine editor. T .A. Anusree was chosen as the sports secretary.
Diana Lalan (post graduate), Reva Ramesh (degree third year), Kavya V Anil Kumar (degree second year) and Linda Johnson (degree first year) were chosen as course representatives and Sneha Jayakumar as a nominated member.
