Attukal temple gears up for famed ponkala

Thiruvananthapuram: The famous Attukal temple in Thiruvananthapuram has all spruced to usher in the renowned Attukal ponkla festival to be held on Tuesday. The temple fest, which holds a place in the Guinness Book of world Records for largest congregation of women devotees, is expected to draw over 40 lakh devotees this time. Traffic in 10 km radius of the temple has already been regulated, police has informed.

The police and municipal corporation have made elaborate arrangements in view of the festival. Around 3000 police personnel will be deployed in two phases for security measures in view of the festival. The security arrangements in various places will be led by 18 DySPs, who will be under the supervision of three SPs.

The temple and the premises will completely under CCTV camera surveillance. Specially trained women shadow police have also been deployed to curb thefts, the city police commissioner said. The green protocol has already been clamped in the area to restrict piling up of plastic wastes. The municipal corporation has recruited 2800 personnel for the smooth conduct of the festival, sources said.
