Filmmaker Shafi, celebrated for bringing laughter to Malayali audiences through his popular comedies, was laid to rest at Kaloor Juma Masijd on Sunday. Shafi passed away at a private hospital in Kochi on Saturday. He was 56.
Rasheed M H, affectionately known as Shafi, had been undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke on January 16. Despite efforts, he remained in critical condition for several days before his demise, hospital sources confirmed. Shafi breathed his last at 12.25 am, according to reports.
Actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan shared the news of Shafi's passing on Facebook, writing, "Shafi sir has departed, leaving behind laughter and unforgettable stories that will be cherished forever. Tributes!!"
Shafi began his film career as an assistant director under the noted filmmaker Rajasenan. He made his directorial debut in 2001 with the hit film 'One Man Show', marking the start of a two-decade-long career in the Malayalam film industry.
Over the years, Shafi directed more than ten films, gaining widespread acclaim for his expertise in comedy. His collaborations with actor Dileep resulted in several blockbusters, including 'Kalyanaraman', 'Marykkundoru Kunjaadu', and 'Two Countries'.
Some of his other celebrated works include 'Pulival Kalyanam', 'Thommanum Makkalum', 'Mayavi', and 'Chattambinadu', which solidified his reputation as a prominent filmmaker in Malayalam cinema. His last directorial venture was the 2022 film 'Aanandam Paramanandam'.
According to family sources, Shafi's body has been shifted to his residence on BTS Road in Edappally. It was kept at the Cochin Service Co-operative Bank Hall in Kaloor from 9 am to noon on Sunday for the public to pay their last respects. The cremation will take place at 4 pm on Sunday at the Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid, the family added.
Shafi's elder brother, Rafi, is part of the renowned writer-director duo Rafi-Mecartin. His uncle, the late filmmaker Siddique, was also a towering figure in Malayalam cinema.
