The state's first green industrial park, which is meant to recycle construction and demolition debris, plastic, glass, and other types of non-biodegradable waste, will come up in Kannur. The government has given sanction for the direct purchase of 13.2698 hectares of land for developing a green industrial park at Panappuzha village in Kannur. The plot will have regional recycling facilities. The project director, Kerala solid waste management project (KSWMP) has been designated as the authority for purchase of land and transfer to the local self government department.

At present, the state does not have any facility for recycling items, including C&D debris, plastic, glass, and leather, among others. These resources are being transported to other states for value addition and production activities. Now, the state is investing heavily to improve the value chain for collection, segregation and processing of various streams of solid wastes. These efforts will lead to channelising significant quantities of this waste into the system, necessitating recycling facilities. Further, this will provide a steady supply of raw materials which can be utilised for recycling and production of various consumable/construction materials, according to the order issued by the Special Secretary, LSGD.

These activities will ensure economic growth and employment generation in the state. The green industrial parks are proposed to be developed with private participation and will encourage the promotion of entrepreneurship as envisaged in the Kerala State Policy for Solid Waste Management. The development of such regional infrastructure requires extensive land at regional levels. As the revenue/government land is not readily available, required land has to be procured/acquired from private owners, the order notes.
