A massive fire gutted a make-shift scrap godown on Manakkadavu Road at Perumanna here on Monday. Fire and Rescue personnel battled for hours before extinguishing the flame that engulfed the warehouse on a 15-cent plot.
The fire that started early on Monday destroyed paper, plastic, and electronic scraps. A mosque situated next to the plot suffered minor damage due to the fire. A migrant worker who jumped down from an adjacent building when the flames rose suffered injuries.
"The fire started around 2.30 am, and it continued till we extinguished it completely by 9 am," said Pramod Kumar, the Station Officer from the Meenchanda Fire Station. Seven fire engines from the Meenchanda, Beach and Vellimadukunnu fire stations were used to put the flames out.
"It was a massive fire. Units had to refill their tankers multiple times from a nearby pond (to douse the fire)," he said. He said the godown does not seem to have insurance coverage.
