Kochi: The police investigation into the alleged theft of 40 sovereigns of gold and Rs 8 lakh from a house near Aluva has revealed the complaint to be false. In a twist to the case, the police arrested a 36-year-old black magician for orchestrating the ruse.

The accused, Anwar alias Usthad, hails from Chiramangad Padalakkattil in Thrissur and has been residing on rent near Kalamassery. According to the investigators, Anwar had deceived a woman in the family into taking possession of the gold and money over time and then helped fabricate a false theft story to mislead authorities.

As per the initial complaint, unidentified burglars broke into Ibrahim Kutty's house, located behind the Casino Theatre in Aluva, while the family was away on January 6. However, a detailed investigation uncovered inconsistencies, leading to the revelation that one of the family members staged the theft.

During interrogation, Laila, Ibrahim Kutty's wife, confessed to staging the break-in at Anwar's behest. She admitted to breaking the front door lock and disrupting the interior to make the story appear credible.

The police revealed that Anwar had manipulated Laila by convincing her that her husband and children would face fatal accidents unless specific rituals were performed. He persuaded her to hand over the gold and money, claiming the valuables would interfere with his rituals if kept in the house. Over several months, Laila gave Anwar the valuables in instalments. When the valuables were exhausted, she resorted to fabricating the theft under Anwar’s guidance.

Laila had reportedly met Anwar through a relative a couple of years ago and blindly believed in his supposed black magic abilities. Police have now launched an investigation into Anwar's activities and whereabouts to uncover the extent of his fraudulent dealings.
