Kochi: Police on Thursday arrested Nigosh Kumar, the owner of Mridanga Vision, who organised a mega Bharatanatyam recital during which Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas sustained severe injuries after she fell from the temporary stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor.
After surrendering at the Palarivattom Police Station, Kumar was interrogated for seven and a half hours before being arrested. The Kerala High Court had directed him to appear at the police station on Thursday. Kumar faces charges under Sections 125 (actions endangering personal safety), 125(b) (causing grievous hurt), and 3(5) (joint criminal liability) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), in addition to Section 118(e) (endangering public safety) of the Kerala Police Act, 2011.
Shalu Vincent, a member of the MLA’s personal staff, filed the complaint. Kumar is expected to be produced in court on Friday. The police are recording the statements of other individuals involved in the case, including Divya Unni, who led the performance. Since the actor-dancer has returned to the US, her statement will be recorded via videoconferencing.
The incident occurred on December 29, when Uma Thomas fell from the gallery during a mega Bharatanatyam performance by 12,000 dancers. It was an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.
As Thomas stood up from her seat to greet other dignitaries, he fell approximately 14 feet from the edge of the stage, suffering fractures to her facial bones, head, and ribs.
