Kochi: Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas sustained a severe injury after falling from the gallery during an event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor. Uma Thomas had arrived at the stadium to watch a mega Bharatanatyam performance by 12,000 dancers, led by actor Divya Unni on Sunday evening.
As she stepped onto the gallery, the MLA fell around 14 feet from the stage's edge. She fell unconscious in the impact of the fall, according to an eyewitness. She was shifted to a nearby private hospital in Palarivattom with a head injury. A pipe fell on the MLA after she had fallen.
The MLA underwent scanning at the hospital. She has been given ventilator support. She has suffered injuries in brain, spine and lungs, hospital authorities said.
Minister Saji Cherian, Kochi City Police Commissioner and other public representatives were also present at the VIP gallery, which had a seating capacity of 40.
