Kalpetta: A joint team from various wings of the police and excise departments seized 172.37 grams of MDMA from a passenger on a private bus bound for Tirur, coming from Bengaluru, in the early hours of Monday.
The arrested, Shamnas M (33), a native of Valluvangad, Malappuram, is accused of purchasing MDMA from Bengaluru and supplying it to small-scale peddlers in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, according to excise department officials. The MDMA was found concealed inside the accused's body.
Excise Circle Inspector T Sherafudheen and Sub Inspector N V Harish Kumar led the operation, which involved various teams from the police and excise departments.
The accused was handed over to the Kalpetta excise range office. As the Christmas and New Year seasons approach, police and excise officials are conducting a series of joint operations to curb the flow of drugs into the state.
