Kalpetta: Police on Thursday apprehended two more suspects in connection with the case where a tribal man was dragged along the road by a car. The accused, Thazhe Punathil Nabeel Kamar and Kunnummal Vishnu, both from Panamaram, were arrested in Kozhikode and later brought to Wayanad, where their arrest was formally recorded.
The mobile numbers of the accused and their families had been under surveillance since the incident. Two other individuals were arrested from their hideout in Kalpetta on Tuesday – Muhammed Arshad (23), son of Ibrahim, from Puthanpeedikayil House, Pachilakkad, and Abiram K (21), son of Sujith, from Kakkarakkal House, Pachilakkad, near Kalpetta.
Mathan, a resident of the Chemmad tribal settlement, was dragged for 500 metres by the group in their car. The altercation began when Mathan confronted the gang, who were allegedly harassing local residents. During the argument, Mathan’s hand became trapped in the car door, causing him to be dragged along the road.
In response to the incident, Minister for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Communities OR Kelu, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, the Kerala State Human Rights Commission, and several leaders from tribal organisations and political parties have called for immediate action against the accused.
