Thrissur: Congresss leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi reached Thrissur on Tuesday to pay last respects to P P Madhavan, personal secretary to Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Madhavan passed away in New Delhi following a heart attack on Monday. He was 73.

Rahul, who arrived in Kerala in the morning, reached Madhavan's residence at Cherussery village in Thrissur district around 9 am and met his family, party sources said. He spent around 45 minutes with the bereaved family, consoled them and expressed his condolences.

Madhavan’s cremation took place on the premises of his ancestral house at Thaikkattussery in Thrissur at 11 am on Tuesday. Apart from Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal, who is also the general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), Kerala opposition leader VD Satheesan, Senior leaders Ramesh Chennithala and VM Sudheeran also attended the public homage at Pattathumana in Cherussery here. 

Madhavan hailed from Thrissur in Kerala and was the son of the late Parameswaran Bhattathiripad and the late Arya Antharjanam of Cherussery Pattathumana in Olllur.

Madhavan, who collapsed following a heart attack, could not be revived even though he was rushed to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi reached the hospital as soon as Madhavan’s death was declared by doctors.

Initially employed with the Union Home Ministry in Delhi, Madhavan later joined the personal staff of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He was subsequently associated closely with the Gandhi family for over four-and-a-half decades.

Madhavan is survived by wife Savithri, son Deepak, daughter Deepthi.
