Thiruvananthapuram: Campus violence has been surging across Kerala since 2016, confirmed official data. The police have registered 500 cases including three deaths of students in the last 9 years. Manorama News reported that SFI and KSU activists topped the list of accused in these cases. The matter came to light after the government produced the data related to the campus violence before the assembly on Friday. The cases are registered from May 2016 to June 2024.
The recent campus violence reported in the state is the clash at the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Thottada in Kannur on December 11. Over ten students including SFI and KSU activists were injured in the clash that erupted over the removal of KSU flag on the campus.
From May 2016 to June 2024, campuses across Kerala reported a series of violence including clashes, ragging and murders. Of the 500 criminal cases, SFI activists were booked in 270 cases, while 112 cases were registered against KSU activists. Apart from these major student outfits, ABVP, MSF, AISF and Campus Front activists are named as accused. According to the official data, a total of 3183 students are booked in various cases.
Three students were murdered and thousands were injured when the campuses turned battlefronts. The deceased are Abhimanyu of Kochi Maharaja's College, Dheeraj of Idukki Engineering College and KS Sidharthan of Wayanad Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
