Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front (UDF) wrested control of three panchayats—Thrissur’s Nattika, Idukki’s Karimannoor, and Palakkad’s Thachambara—from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the byelections held for 31 local self-governing wards across the state.

Of the 31 contested seats, the UDF won 17, the LDF secured 11, and the BJP claimed victory in 3. Before the by-elections, the tally stood at LDF with 15, UDF with 13, and BJP with 3 seats.

The byelections recorded a voter turnout of 61.87%. Spread across 11 districts, elections were held in 4 block panchayats, 3 municipal wards, and 23 grama panchayat wards, including the Thrikkalangode ward of Malappuram District Panchayat. A total of 102 candidates contested these elections.

LDF wrests UDF seat in Athirampuzha
Kerala Congress (M), a constituent of the LDF, captured a sitting UDF seat in the byelection held for the Athirampuzha grama panchayat in Kottayam district. The election was held in the third ward (ITI ward), where T.D. Mathew of Kerala Congress (M) won with a margin of 216 votes.

The ITI ward has traditionally been a stronghold of the UDF in the Athirampuzha panchayat. The only previous LDF victory in the ward was in 2005, when Lizy John won as an LDF-backed independent candidate.
