Malayali woman dies by hanging in husband's residence in TN, family alleges dowry harassment

The family of a 24-year-old Malayali woman who was found dead in her husband's residence at Nagercoil has alleged that she was harassed for dowry. Sruthi B S allegedly committed suicide by hanging on Monday. She got married to Karthick, employed as Commercial Assistant with the Tamilnadu State Electricity board on April 21. Sruthi was the daughter of Babu Parameswaran Nair and Sathidevi. Her father is employed as a special grade foreman with TNSEB in Coimbatore. They are natives of Pidavoor, Pathanapuram. Sruthi's family shifted to Coimbatore 35 years ago.

M Atham Ali, SI, Suchindram police, said that a case has been registered and an RDO inquiry is underway. Her mother-in-law, Chempakavalli, has been admitted to the hospital after she consumed poison following the death of Sruthi. Police said that her condition is critical.

Sruthi had reportedly sent an audio message to her mother on Sunday morning. In the clip, she is heard apologizing to her mother, saying that she couldn't bear it anymore. "Don't blame him (husband) for anything. He is not the reason for this and you know that," Sruthi says in the audio clip. Her mortal remains were cremated in Coimbatore on Wednesday. 

Sruthi completed her post-graduation in literature from Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore and was employed in the same college as Assistant Professor for two years. Her father alleged that Sruthi was tortured at her husband's residence for more dowry. " She was preparing for her PhD entrance. She always complained to us about the ill-treatment she received from her mother-in-law. Whenever we took it up with her mother-in-law, she would deny it," said Babu. Sruthi has a brother Vishal who is a Mechanical Engineering graduate.
