Malappuram: A pregnant woman's condition deteriorated after an incompatible blood group was transfused into her body at Government Woman and Children Hospital in Malappuram's Ponnani on Friday at 3.30 pm.
Ponnani Veliyankod native Ruksana (26) has reportedly received B+ve group blood instead of the O-ve group.
Ruksana was rushed to Govt. Medical College Hospital in Thrissur after her condition became worse. The woman had shown transfusion reactions soon after she received the mismatched group. The relatives have shifted her to the Medical College Hospital after she experienced uneasiness.
The incident has received huge criticism from various corners. The Ponnani municipality opposition members have gheraoed the hospital superintendent Dr PK Asha on Friday for four hours.
"There was serious medical negligence at the hospital. The hospital lacked the vigilance they had to pay for the patient. The hospital administration has admitted their mistake and ensured their vigil in future. We have learned that one of the nursing staff has been suspended as a preliminary action. The superintendent has also ensured that a detailed inquiry would be conducted and necessary action would be taken against the responsible persons", Farhan Biyyam, UDF member and opposition leader of the municipality said.
Dr Asha said that around 15 ml of blood was transfused to the pregnant woman mistakingly and they stopped the transfusion soon after they realised the mistake.
"We have soon taken preventive measures to stabilise the woman and referred her to the Thrissur Medical College Hospital. An internal inquiry has been conducted here and the report has been submitted to the District Medical Officer. As far as we know, the pregnant lady is stable at the Medical College now", Dr Asha told On Manorama.
Malappuram District Medical Officer Dr. R Renuka said that she was away from the district to attend a meeting. She added that she would initiate further proceedings in the incident after examining the preliminary investigation report submitted to her from the Ponnani hospital.
