Kottayam: The mortal remains of Vandana Das, the 25-year-old doctor fatally stabbed by a patient at the Kottarakara taluk hospital, was consigned to flames on Thursday afternoon.
People at the hometown of Dr Vandana Das paid their final tributes to the slain young doctor at her home at Muttuchira, Kaduthuruthy on Thursday.
A large crowd had gathered outside Dr Vandana's house ever since her mortal remains were brought home at 8 pm on Wednesday.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, Kerala's Minister for Co-operation and Registration VN Vasavan, Kottayam MP Thomas Chazhikadan, MLAs Thiruvanchoor Radhkrishnan and Mons Joseph attended the funeral.
A police team coordinated the traffic in the area under the supervision of the district police chief K Karthik. The traffic is restricted from Kuruppanthara to Kaduthuruthy.
Ministers VN Vasavan, Roshy Augustine and Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar were among those present to pay homage to the 25-year-old house surgeon, who was brutally murdered while on duty at the taluk hospital in Kottarakkara.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Dr Vandana was stabbed to death by a man who had been taken into custody by the police for a 'violent incident'.
After the post-mortem on Wednesday, Dr Vandana's mortal remains were kept for public to pay homage at the Medical College Hospital. Later, the body was taken to her alma-mater Azeezia Medical College at Kollam for her college mates and staff to pay respects.
Vandana was the only daughter of KG Mohandas and Vasanthakumari. She completed her schooling at D Paul School in Kottayam's Kuravilangad. She was a final year MBBS student of Azeezia Institute and a house surgeon at the taluk hospital.
