Thiruvananthapuram: The police in Kerala have approached the Interpol as part of their investigation into the case related to the mysterious disappearance of Lisa Wiese, a German national, from the state three years ago. A questionnaire has now been sent to the Interpol seeking the response from Muhammad Ali, a UK national with whom Lisa arrived in Kerala.
“After receiving the reply from Interpol, we are planning to travel abroad as part of the probe. Clearance has been sought in this regard from the government,” said a police officer attached to the Kerala Police.
Missing since March, 2019
Lisa had gone missing without leaving a trace a few days after arriving at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala along with Muhammad Ali on March 7, 2019. Meanwhile, Ali returned to London via Dubai, taking a flight from Kochi on March 15, 2019. Lisa’s relatives in Germany received a call from her on March 10, 2019 and there was no contact afterwards.
Earlier, Lisa had told her sister Caroline that she was travelling to India with Ali. Lisa hoped to enjoy some solitude in India, said Caroline. Lisa’s relatives also informed the police that she was facing severe psychological issues at that time.
However, as investigation progressed, the COVID-19 outbreak occurred and the police investigation was stalled. Since then, Lisa’s family has contacted neither the Kerala Police nor the German consulate.
The case so far
As per the information collected by the Kerala Police till now, Lisa was attracted to Islam and converted to that religion. Later, Lisa married a man she met in Cairo, Egypt and settled down in the US with him. Lisa and the man had two children in the US.
However, Lisa’s relationship with the man turned sour and she returned to Germany leaving her two children with her mother-in-law.
As Lisa’s family members in Germany did not approve her conversion to Islam, they did not maintain close ties with her.
Clues obtained
After the Kerala Police launched their search for Lisa in 2019, they received a phone call which said that she was seen at a shopping centre in Thrissur. However, a check of the CCTV visuals from the spot showed that it was a false lead. Similar was a misleading lead about Lisa in front of an ATM counter in Thiruvananthapuram. However, the police confirmed that Liza had visited Varkala. An alert was issued to the airports, but there was no progress.
Latvian woman’s case
Incidentally, a young woman tourist from Latvia had been murdered in Kerala in 2018 and when Lisa’s missing case was reported, there was alarm in the state.
The Latvian tourist had gone missing from Kovalam, a world-renowned beach tourism destination near Thiruvananthapuram, on March 14, 2018. Her decaying body was later found on April 21, 2018 from a mangrove forest at Vazhamuttom, near Kovalam. Autopsy and police investigation revealed that the Latvian lady was drugged and raped.
