Malappuram: Nearly a hundred spectators were injured after a makeshift gallery collapsed during a sevens football tournament at Poongode in Malappuram district on Saturday.

All the injured person have been taken to nearby hospitals in Wandoor and Nilambur. None of them are said to be serious, the police informed.

The incident occurred at 9pm on Saturday during the final match of the event between United FC Nellikuthu and Royal Travels FC Kozhikode.

It is understood that the gallery that gave way had accommodated about 2,000 spectators. The galleries were built using palm wood planks.

From a video that is widely circulated on social media, angry spectators can be seen stamping on the trophies that were to be presented to the teams.

Locals have alleged that the organisers did not restrict the flow of spectators even after the galleries were full.
