A group of four labourers hailing from Bengal had boarded the train from Aluva without tickets. When the TTE detected their ticket-less travel, he imposed a fine and gave them the required papers. However, by that time, one person in the group had shifted to another compartment.

Later, while checking tickets in that compartment, Ansal noticed the labourer who had escaped without paying the fine and questioned him. This led to an argument and the TTE was reportedly attacked when the train reached Thrissur.
