Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday summoned Swapna Suresh, a key accused in the diplomatic gold smuggling case, for seeking more clarity on her latest revelations. Swapna however, left the ED office without giving the statement citing health issues.
The ED officials has granted the accused more time when she cited health issues. Swapna reached the ED office after meeting her lawyer.
Swapna had recently come out with public statements blaming IAS officer M Sivasankar for his role in the hawala transactions related to the smuggling of gold through diplomatic channels.
Even though ED had issued summons to Swapna for appearing before it on February 9, she sought more time due to her ill health.
Swapna, in media interviews, had claimed that she prepared a voice clip meant to derail the investigation and cast suspicions over ED based on Sivasankar’s instructions. She also said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was named as per Sivasankar’s advice.
The clip in Swapna’s voice was recorded by Sandeep, another accused in the case. In it, she is heard saying that, “Those investigating the state cabinet in connection with the gold smuggling would lose their case.”
According to Swapna, Sivasankar also asked her to hide in Bengaluru till she obtained anticipatory bail. Moreover, she claimed to have learnt from reliable sources that Sivasankar was also behind the decision to hand over the probe to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
