Thiruvananthapuram: Even as the COVID-19 situation in Kerala continues to be severe, Health Minister Veena George has said that fewer patients remain in need of hospitalisation.

As of Tuesday, only 3.8% of the 2,85,365 active cases in Kerala are hospitalised.

According to a press release issued by the health department, only 0.7% of those under treatment need oxygen support while just 0.4% are admitted to ICU beds.

Of the 3,107 ICU beds in the state, 385 are occupied by COVID patients while 1,328 (including non-COVID) is the total occupancy, which leaves 57.3% of beds vacant.

Meanwhile, the minister said that at least 86% of ventilators are unoccupied. Of the 2,293 ventilators in the state, 322 are occupied in total. Only 100 COVID patients are on ventilator support, the minister said.

Cases are rampant in the 20-30 age group, the health department has stated.
