Kumarakom: A young man ended life in Kumarakom on Monday after he fell out with his lover. The incident happened at a desolate stretch at this popular tourist destination in Kottayam district. The girl who was with him fled from the spot, claimed local residents.

The incident occurred at an abandoned plot owned by the Irrigation Department at Cheepunkal near here.

The police retrieved a bag and a letter purportedly written by Gopi from the scene.

The note stated that he was committing suicide as a fallout of his dispute with his lover, police said.

Hunt on for the girl
The police have intensified the search for the girl. The dog squad was pressed into service as part of tracing her.

The cops recovered a mask and a kerchief from a spot near the place where Gopi's body was found. Her mobile phone has also been found.

It was on Monday, around 10am, that both of them reached the abandoned plot situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake. The local people had seen both of them walking to the plot.

After one hour when some local residents passed by the area, Gopi was found hanging. Some saw the girl running through the road adjacent to the backwaters.

Gopi is a mobile phone technician. The girl, who is a nursing student, and Gopi used to come to the place often.

Gopi's body is now kept at the mortuary of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

Deputy Superintendent of Police J Santhosh Kumar, Kottayam West Station House Officer AP Anoop Krishna and Sub Inspector T Sreejith visited the spot.
