Kochi: In a move that may promote cycling as an alternative mode of commute, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has decided to allow taking bicycles on its trains. The increasing number of bicycle riders in Kochi city could benefit from the decision.
In the beginning the facility will be provided only at six stations; Changampuzha Park, Palarivattom, South, Town Hall, Maharajas College and Elamkulam.
KMRL MD and additional chief secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma said cycles are being allowed in the metro as part of the corporation’s initiative to ensure complete journey for passengers. The cycles can be carried through lift to the platforms. The cycles are to be kept either in the front or rear portion of the train.
Metro staff will assist in keeping the cycles on the coach.

KMRL has also started a feeder service from Kalamassery metro station to Kakkanad. A minivan, which is being used for the service, will depart from Kalamassery to Kakkanad at 9:30 am. In the evening, the vehicle will start from the Collectorate at 5 pm to Kalamassery station.
The vehicle will stop only at the metro station and collectorate. At the moment autorickshaw feeder services are available from Vyttila metro station to 12 different routes.
