Kozhikode: With the completion of Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi road tunnel project whose work was inaugurated today, people will be able to avoid the Thamarassery mountain pass which is considered as the biggest block in Wayanad journey due to its steep turns and bends.
Traffic jams are a common thing along the 12 km mountain pass which has nine hairpin bends. Landslides on this stretch during monsoon also create major hurdles in the movement of vehicles. All these problems will be resolved once the work on the road tunnel is completed.
The road tunnel will also become a part of the proposed Kochi Bengaluru industrial corridor which is expected to become a reality in over 30 years. One of the significant highlights of the project is that it poses no threat to the forest area. Being a tunnel road there will not be any destruction to the forest zone. The alternative road having a distance of 7.82 km will have 6.9 tunnel road from Swargamkunnu to Kalladi.
