Will liquor outlets remain shut in Kerala? CM chairs meeting

Minister for Excise and Labour TP Ramakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram: Despite signs that they might open on Monday, liquor outlets in Kerala are likely to remain shut for the remainder of the lockdown.

In a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the State capital on Saturday, it was brought to light that the reopening of liquor outlets will spur uncontrollable crowds, putting many lives at risk. Several forces too would have to be redeployed to restrain them from where they may be needed most.

After reporting no coronavirus cases on Friday, the State is unlikely to not have all hands on board to curb the spread of coronavirus and eliminate the risk of community spread.

Minister for Excise and Labour TP Ramakrishnan had on Saturday told reporters that though the Centre had given the nod, the final decision will be taken in consultation with the state.

He also pointed out that the outlets are ready to reopen when the State wants.

Barring the two days required for cleaning purposes, everything is ready, the minister said.

Chief Minister Pinrayi Vijayan will announce more details after his daily COVID-19 briefing on Saturday.

Heavy losses in absence of liquor sales

During this over-a-month-long lockdown, the states collectively have lost an estimated revenue of over Rs 24,0000 crore from the absence of liquor sale. Some states earn as much as 20 per cent of their revenue from selling liquor alone.

Last Saturday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan admitted that Kerala was going through a tough time due to bad financial position. Kerala is one of the highest alcohol consuming states in India.
