Aluva: A nun who joined her fellow Sisters' protest against raped accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been asked to leave the congregation. Sister Lucy Kalappurakkal from Karakkamadom Nunnery of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) has been served a notice to leave. She has been threatened with expulsion if she doesn't quit voluntarily.
Sister Lucy had rendered an explanation at the FCC Convent Generalate ‘Portiuncula’ at Ashokapuram in Ernakulam the other day. She spoke with Mother Superior Sister Ann Joseph and counsellors for 10 minutes. But the congregation was not satisfied with the explanation, as per the mother superior. However, Sister Lucy said she would fight on.
Four letters were sent by the Mother Superior to Sister Lucy over her recent behaviour which has been dubbed 'unbecoming' of a congregation member. She was asked to respond in person on January 9.
Though Lucy replied through emails from Wayanad, where she works, Sister Lucy met the Mother General only two months later.
Sister Lucy had invited the wrath of the church leadership after participating in a street protest in front of the Kerala High Court in Kochi along with five nuns belonging to the Missionaries of Jesus demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco.
Bishop Franco was arrested last year following allegations by a nun that he had repeatedly raped her at the Kuravilangad convent in Kerala's Kottayam district between 2014 and 2016. The bishop had denied all the charges.
