Three suspects in Kannur rape case likely in the Middle East

Kannur: Three men, accused of raping a minor girl from Pappinissery in Kannur, are known to have left the country two months before the incident came to light. Police said on Friday that they have taken measures to cancel their passports.

Taliparamba DySP Venugopal KV stated that the suspects Shiljesh, Shinos and Munees Musthafa escaped to some Gulf country, and they might not have left, fearing arrest, but for jobs. “They left almost two months before the girl and brother informed police regarding the abuse. Since the girl was silent about the incident, most of them might have thought that the abuse would not come to light. These three would have left most probably for better jobs in the Gulf,” said the DySP.

Shiljesh had assaulted the girl in a lodge at Parassinikkadavu and Shinos and Munees violated her at Pazhayangadi, said the police. Of the 19 accused, 10 were arrested.

Police added that they have obtained from the girl's mobile phone call details of a councillor from Sreekantapuram. However, since the victim did not complain against him, they will have to record the statement again to register any case.

The girl's statements can be recorded only before a magistrate, but since she demanded for a woman magistrate, the same was delayed. The DySP said that the victim would be brought before the Child Welfare Committee for detailed statements.
