Kozhikode: KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran has raised serious allegations against Kerala DGP Loknath Behera.
The Congress leader alleged that Behera had tried to protect Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah in the Ishrat Jahan case.
Mullappally said Behera had given a clean chit to the duo when he was the NIA chief. He claimed that he had seen the files pertaining to the case when he was the minister of state for home.
"Narendra Modi had recommended Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan to make Behera the state police chief," he alleged.
Mullappally made the allegations during a Youth League event in Vadakara. Rubbishing Mullappally's allegations, BJP leader MT Ramesh said the KPCC chief should stop making baseless allegations and back his claims with evidence.
Ishrat Jahan and three other accomplices were killed in an encounter by Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police in June, 2004. The police alleged they were LeT operatives, had terror links and plotted to kill the then state chief minister Narendra Modi.
Shah, who served as home minister then, was quizzed by CBI in the case. The CBI had in 2014 given a clean chit to Shah, citing insufficient evidence against him.
