Kottayam: The railway station here can soon boast of a state-of-the-art multi-level parking lot for motorbikes. The tender proceedings for the complex have been completed, said Jose K Mani MP. The Railways which is implementing the project is scheduled to finish the work by March, 2019.

The Rs 1.65-cr project in 2000 square feet would house as many as 250 two-wheelers in three storeys with each floor encompassing an area of 650 sqft. Authorities have said the new complex for two-wheelers would consume only a portion of the existing parking space of the railway station, thereby giving room for other vehicles to use the remaining space.

The new facility will come up beside Mali Hotel in front of the station. It will have ramps, instead of lifts, through which people could straightaway drive their vehicles to any of the three floors.

Motorcyclists can take a direct route to the first floor of the parking lot from the railway station, or get access to the second floor straight from the main road. The structure is being built using iron girders and sheets so that it can be easily dismantled and transported to another location for future needs. A team led by the railway engineer had held talks with Jose K Mani pertaining to the construction of the complex.
