Alappuzha: Kerala's literacy star Karthyayani Amma is now a step closer to her dream of learning computer. The 97-year-old, who recently secured a first rank in the government's 'Aksharalaksham' state literacy examinations, was gifted a laptop by none other than Education Minister C Raveendranath on Wednesday.

An excited Karthyayani Amma asked the minister to switch on the device so that she could type something. When the minister opened a fresh Word Document, Karthyayani Amma typed her name by exploring the keyboard and pressing the keys carefully with her point finger, one after the other.

"See, I can spell my name in English now," Amma told a surprised minister with sheer delight. She also expressed her wish of attending SSLC equivalent examination next year itself.
