Anchalummoodu: In a sad turn of events, a youth who took part in the cleaning drive carried out in flood-affected areas has succumbed to rat fever. The deceased was Vinu, 28, son of Vaikkath Ravi Pillai, residing at Murunthal, Thrikkadavur. He was the joint secretary of DYFI’s Murunthal unit and employed as a construction worker.

Vinu had joined the cleaning drive carried out at Ranni in Pathanamthitta along with other workers of his construction company on August 24. He had an injury on his foot at that time.

After returning home, Vinu developed fever and was admitted to a Medical College Hospital in Kollam. Lab tests confirmed rat fever and he was under treatment for the disease there. Relatives had pledged the family’s only house and property for finding the money for his treatment. Many local people too had helped. With Vinu’s death, the family has lost its only breadwinner.

The body of Vinu, who died a couple of days ago, was cremated. He is survived by mother Bhanumathy Amma and sister Ramya.
