Mullappally Ramachandran will replace M M Hassan as the new Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president. Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday also appointed M I Shanavas, K Sudhakaran and Kodikkunnil Suresh as working presidents. Benny Behanan will be the UDF convener and K Muraleedharan will head the election campaign committee.
Mullappally, the KPCC president-designate, talks to Onmanorama on his new responsibility, its challenges and the political scenario in the state.
What are the challenges you face in your new role?
The nation is going through a phase of crises. The primary mission is to ensure the Congress party’s return to power in Kerala with the cooperation of leaders and workers. We will work together with the spirit of equality and without any divisions.
How do you evaluate the political situation in Kerala?
It requires a strong battle to defeat the ruling Left Democratic Front. There are places where the BJP is emerging as a powerful force. We need to work unitedly to make a definite impact.
What about the three working presidents the party appointed along with you?
I accept it wholeheartedly. There is no one-man show in Congress. The party's strength is in combined efforts. The aim is to take along all the leaders and workers.
