Mananthavady: A small lake has developed in an interior area in hilly Wayanad district after a landslide occurred a fortnight ago here. It was noticed only late this week as the area was not accessible so far after the natural disaster.
The water body, which is at least one acre in size, has shaped up in a wooded stretch of Thavinjal panchayat after earth slipped and blocked a rivulet. It was only the other day that forest officials and local people stumbled upon the sight, 2 km from Thalappuzha Nalpathimoonnam Mile.
The soil that fell from one side of a hill is strewn over forest land across five acres. The earth, boulders and trees the landslide brought have accumulated near a ridge opposite the river and resultantly its course has been blocked.
The forest department will request the state geology department to study about the calamity, according to Begur range officer K P Abdul Samad. Forest officials have already inspected the location.
Already reports have been submitted to senior officials about recent landslides at Thalapuzha, Pilakavu and Pancharakolli villages, the officer added.
