Kochi: Cardiac expert AK Abraham died in Kochi. He was 81. Dr Abraham is credited with leading Kerala’s first open heart surgery unit and the first cardiac pacing unit. He was a pioneer in tapping the potential of the internet in healthcare.

A former medical adviser to the Indian Army and a former member of the Malayala Manorama Board of Directors, Dr Abraham was being treated at the Medical Trust Hospital in Kochi after he suffered a stroke. He died at 1.35 am on Wednesday.

Dr Abraham started his career with the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Tamil Nadu after completing his studies from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and the CMC. He later served at the Samaritan Hospital at Pazhanganad, Medical Trust Hospital, and the Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital at Kadavanthra.

He was a visiting fellow at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

Dr Abraham is a member of the Adangapuram family at Thalavadi in Kuttanad. He is survived by wife, Maya; son Anand and daughter Indu. Deepa is his daughter-in-law.
