Kozhikode: Monsoon fury continued to wreak havoc in north Kerala triggering landslips, building collapses and claiming several lives.

The bodies of five from a family who went missing in the landslide at Chettiampara near Nilambur in Malappuram district were recovered on Thursday morning.

The deceased have been identified as: Geetha, 24; Navaneeth, 6; Nived, 14; Kunji Amma, 55; and Midhun, 17. Search personnel have located the body of more person from the same family – Subrahmanian.

Low-lying areas are getting flooded after all the shutters of Banasurasagar dam were opened about on Thursday, officials said.

A 50-year-old woman, Lilly, belonging to Lakshamveedu colony near Vythiri police station, died in the landslide in the early hours of Thursday. Five others, who were trapped under a house that collapsed, were rescued.

Authorities have opened 50 relief camps. Families from the low-lying areas are being shifted to these camps. Vythiri, Kottappura, Kuppadithara, Kalpetta and Valad in Mananthavady are the worst-hit areas.

Traffic through Thamassery churam, Periya churam and Palchuram have been suspended.

In Kozhikode, one person is missing in Kaithappoyil area of Thamarassery.

The Marippuzha bridge collapsed affecting traffic on the route. The nearby roads are also flooded.

Minor landslips have been reported from Muthappanpuzha, Kaimb, Maripuzha and Kavunkalel, according to disaster management cell here.

Two deaths were reported from Kannur on Wednesday – Immattiyil Thomas and son Jaison's wife Shyni were killed after their house in Edappuzha Keezhanganam collapsed.

In Ayyankunnu and Aralam areas, 200 families have been shifted to camps. Police, fire force and Kannur Territorial army personnel are carrying out the rescue operations.

Traffic restrictions are in place towards Kottiyur and Mananthavady, due to minor landslips.

Kasaragod district is the least affected in the rain. However, the water level in Thejaswini river is rising due to rain in Karnataka, according to disaster management officials.
